Please note:
This is not a tight fitting sock pattern. If you would like a closer Fitting sock, I suggest using 2mm/U.S. 0 & 2.75mm/U.S. 2. It still works up quickly, & it still fits an average size woman's 8-9.
COMPLETE EXPLANATIONS AND HINTS AT END OF PATTERN. PLEASE READ ENTIRE PATTERN THROUGH BEFORE BEGINNING PATTERN.
Cast on:
Using smaller needle, i.e., 2.5 mm {US 1 or 1 ½ } (or 2mm/U.S. 0) needles, & the long tail cast on,
cast on 64 stitches as follows:
Needle 1 = 16 stitches
Needle 2 = 32 stitches
Needle 3 = 16 stitches + 1 extra
Joining:
Checking to make sure you don't twist your cast on; taking Needle 4, purl together the last stitch on Needle 3, and the 1st stitch on Needle1. You have now created an invisible join. Place a marker here so that you know this is the beginning of the round. Knit through the back loop of the next stitch
From this point on you are simply knitting the pattern, i.e, Twisted Rib Stitch.,all rounds worked "K1 through back loop, P* repeat
Work Twisted Rib Stitch for 1 ½ to 2 inches.
Leg:
1.) Switching to larger needles, i.e., 3 mm {US 3.25}(or 2mm/U.S. 0) knit one round, Begin Daughter's Stitch. The pattern has a 19 row repeat.
2.) Repeat pattern 3 ½ times.
Note: However many repeats you chose to do, be certain to stop on round 8
.
Heel Flap:
Before you begin the heel flap make certain that your stitches are arranged as follows:
Needle 1: 16 stitches
Needle 2: 32 stitches
Needle 3: 16 stitches
You will now be working on needles 1 & 3 to create the heel. Either leave Needle 2 stitches on its needle, or place on holder. [I like a tight heel, so I recommend switching back to the smaller needles]. On right side:
*Sl 1, K1,* rep to end.
Wrong side:
Sl 1, purl remainder of stitches
Repeat the above 2 rows for a total of 33 rows.
Turn Heel:
Round 1: Knit until 2 stitches past center stitch. SSK, K1. Turn
Knit until 2 stitches past center stitch. SSK, K1. Turn
Round 2: Sl 1, P7, P2tog, P1. Turn.
Round 3: Sl 1. Knit to one stitch before
last stitch worked. Slip this stitch & the first stitch past the gap, purlwise. Knit the 2 slipped stitches together (thereby closing the gap.)
K1. Turn.
Round 4: Sl 1. Purl to one stitch before last stitch worked. Purl this stitch, & the stitch past the gap together. P1. Turn.
Repeat until all stitches have been turned.
Knit back across & begin gusset.
Gusset
:
If you were using the smaller needles, switch back to larger needles.
With Needle 1 or with an extra needle, working from the right side, pick up stitches along the edge of the rows you just knit. (17 stitches + 1 in the ditch. The "ditch" is the space between the stitches you have just picked up and & the foot needle, it closes up the hole.)
Needle 2, knit across maintaining established pattern. With an extra needle (this will be Needle 3), again from the right side, pick up stitches along the edge of the rows {17 stitches + 1 in the ditch) & knit to the center of the heel stitches. Make certain you have picked up the SAME number of stitches on both sides
Evenly divide heel stitches on needles 1 & 3.
You should once again have 3 needles: 1 & 3 are heel stitches, & Needle 2 (with 32 stitches) are the instep/pattern stitches.
Round 1:With needle 1, knit to 3 stitches before the end of the heel stitches, K2tog, K1. Needle 2, maintain pattern. Needle 3: K1, SSK, knit till end of round.
With needle 1, knit to 3 stitches before the end of the heel stitches, K2tog, K1. Needle 2, maintain pattern. Needle 3: K1, SSK, knit till end of round.
Round 2: Needles 1 & 3 knit. Needle 2, maintain pattern.
Repeat rounds 1 & 2 until you have the original number of stitches on your needles.
Instep:
With the original number of stitches on your needles, continue knitting on needles 1 & 3, & maintaining the pattern on needle 2. Knit until you are 2 inches from the end of your foot (approx. 3 ½ pattern repeats from the beginning of the gusset. This is approximately 7 -9 inches from the edge of heel.) Cease pattern, & knit 2 more rounds.
Toe:
I like a tight
toe, so I recommend switching back to the smaller needles, i.e., 2.5 mm {US 3 }(or 2mm/U.S. 0.)
Round 1: NEEDLE 1: K to the last 3 stitch on needle, K2tog, K1; NEEDLE 2: K1 SSK, knit to 3 stitches before the end of needle 3, K2tog, K1; NEEDLE 3: K1, SSK, knit to end of needle.
Round 2: Knit
Repeat rows 1 & 2 until you have 16 stitches remaining on needles 1 & 3. And 16 stitches remaining on needle 2. (You should have knit/decreased for approximately 2 inches.)
Finish with Kitchener Stitch.
Suggestion: Steam block. It will make a wonderful difference.
